There is a third myth about the war on terror, and this is one that is perhaps the most dangerous. Some apparently believe that getting out of Iraq before the job is done will strengthen America's hand in the fight against the terrorists. This myth is dangerous because it represents a complete validation of the al Qaeda strategy. The terrorists do not expect to be able to beat us in a stand-up fight. They never have, and they're not likely to try. The only way they can win is if we lose our nerve and abandon the mission -- and the terrorists do believe that they can force that outcome. Time after time, they have predicted that the American people do not have the stomach for a long-term fight. They've cited the cases of Beirut in the '80s and Somalia in the '90s. These examples, they believe, show that we are weak and decadent, and that if we're hit hard enough, we'll pack it in and retreat. The result would be even greater danger for the United States, because if the terrorists conclude that attacks will change the behavior of a nation, they will attack that nation again and again. And believing they can break our will, they'll become more audacious in their tactics, ever more determined to strike and kill our citizens, and ever more bold in their ambitions of conquest and empire. Why is Bella Pelosi smiling?
She just passed a bill to raise taxes and secure defeat in Iraq.

“’A Triumph for Pelosi.’ That’s how the Associated Press described [Friday’s] vote by the House to demand a U.S. retreat from Iraq, and in the perverse calculus of Capitol Hill we suppose it was. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has demonstrated she can pile on enough pork to bribe enough Democrats to cobble together a bare, partisan majority to ”send a message“ that has no chance of becoming law. Congratulations. ‘Today is an historic day,’ Ms. Pelosi said on the House floor. ‘The new Congress will vote to end the war in Iraq.’ But of course the bill does nothing of the sort. If she truly wanted to end the war, the Speaker and her fellow Democrats could simply have used their power of the purse to refuse to fund it. But that would have meant taking some responsibility for what happens in Iraq, which is the last thing Democrats want to do. So they have passed a bill that funds the war while claiming it ends the war. The bill’s ‘benchmarks’ and deadlines certainly have nothing to do with achieving victory in Iraq, or assisting General David Petraeus’s campaign to secure Baghdad. They are all about the war inside the Democratic Caucus. On the one hand, they appease the antiwar left by pretending to declare the war illegal if certain goals aren’t met by Iraqis or U.S. forces. But on the other, they allow ‘moderates’ from swing districts to claim they are nonetheless ‘supporting the troops.’ Acts of Congress don’t get much more cynical than that.” —The Wall Street Journal

They own defeat, it's worse than that.
They can't permit victory politically. They simply cannot.
They are so far out now from over the edge that even if there is victory, they can't even lay any claim to it or even say that they had a role and played any assistance in it. It's not that they're wedded to it now. For their political future, we must lose, and they must bring that about and all you need to do is see this smiling picture of Nancy Pelosi announcing this vote victory last Friday in the House of Representatives.
The main thrust of that bill is to quit, to give up and lose by March 31st of 2008, and there she is just smiling like she's never been happier.
