Last month, President Bush signed off on a few dog-and-pony illegal immigrant employment raids. Whoop-de-doo. Politically expedient holiday gestures over, the White House is now back to work pushing its long-planned, massive alien amnesty. The state of the borders, green card process and entrance system for visitors and tourists? Porous. Chaotic. Understaffed. And overwhelmed.

Bush Slammed as Border Patrol Agents Begin Prison Terms [Update]

The Republican Party just hammered another nail in their 2008 coffin.

"As for President Bush using his powers to pardon the two agents, I can only go by his track record on border security. I expect him to do exactly what he has been doing for the last six years." "NOTHING."

The Associated Press is reporting that President Bush is open to the possibility of a pardon for border agents, saying "there's a process for pardons." He added that the White House will review the case.

As two U.S. Border Patrol agents surrendered to federal marshals Wednesday afternoon to begin serving more than a decade in jail for shooting an illegal drug smuggler, a federal lawmaker and conservative advocacy group expressed outrage at President Bush for not pardoning the men.

"This is the worst betrayal of American defenders I have ever seen," Rep. Dana Rohrabacher said of the president.

"It's shameful this was done by someone who is in the Republican Party," the California Republican added in comments coinciding with the jailing of agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. Bush "obviously thinks more about his agreements with Mexico than the lives of American people and backing up his defenders."

"Our border agents risk their lives daily to uphold our immigration laws and defend our borders," he said. "If the conviction of Ramos and Compean is an indication of how our government will repay them, we can be certain good men and women will soon flee the ranks of Border Patrol service."

The immunity agreement protected Aldrete-Davila from being charged in the United States with drug smuggling. Ramos and Compean found 743 pounds of marijuana in the van he abandoned near the Rio Grande along the border with Mexico.

Aldrete-Davila was shot after he illegally entered the United States near Fabens, Texas, and refused efforts by the agents to stop his vehicle. Court records show he jumped from his van and ran south to the Rio Grande, where he was confronted by Compean, who was knocked to the ground.

Although wounded, Aldrete-Davila managed to cross the border and escape in a waiting van. The government's prosecution began after an investigator from the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General located Aldrete-Davila in Mexico. The investigator had been dispatched after the suspect's mother complained to a Border Patrol agent in Arizona that her son had been shot.

Ramos and Compean shot Aldrete-Davila somewhere in the nether regions.
Perhaps they should have aimed a little higher.

James A. Traficant Jr., the former Democrat congressman convicted of racketeering and taking bribes, is wiling away prison time painting colorful pictures but also able to collect a congressional pension of nearly $40,000 a year.

Other recent convicts include former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a California Republican convicted of graft and imprisoned last year, and former Rep. Bob Ney, an Ohio Republican convicted last year of corruption charges tied to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Cunningham is eligible for about $36,000 a year, while Ney is in line for a $29,000 annual pension, according to estimates from the National Taxpayers Union (NTU). Other estimates, from groups such as the Congressional Research Service, vary slightly.

Former Rep. Daniel Rostenkowski, an Illinois Democrat convicted in 1996 of mail fraud related to the House post office scandal and pardoned by President Clinton in 2001, this year will collect an estimated $125,000 congressional pension, according to NTU estimates. Washington Times

Kennedy bill gives Congress say on 'surge'

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's proposal yesterday to require congressional approval for a troop surge was generally dismissed by fellow Democrats, revealing the deep divisions.

Nancy Pelosi and the new Democratic majority in Congress and their dust-up over a "100 Hours" of reform may be just that — a lot of dust.

We hear from the Hill that among Pelosi’s first acts was to give the House off from work Monday, Jan. 8, which should have been its first "back to business" day.

But that’s not all. House Speaker Pelosi’s office has plenty of more "off days" marked, including Feb. 19-23, April 2-13, May 28-June 1, July 2-6, and Aug. 6-31.

No doubt, implementation of the Democrats’ "100 hours" agenda could take months — not hours.

Democrats vowed to immediately launch a 100-hour push to pass a wide range of legislation, including raising the minimum wage, implementing 9/11 Commission recommendations, cutting subsidies to the oil industry, promoting embryonic stem cell research and making college educations and prescription drugs more affordable.

It sounded like major action in days. But the "100 hours” refers only to the time that Congress is actually in session. And none of those hours are being chalked up on Monday. And Congress can easily be in session for a few hours any given day — meaning a 100 hours can last a long, long time. Source
