Senate Votes to Revive Amnesty

U.S. Senate Immigration Roll Call Votes Immigration Bill CrushedThe Senate drove a stake Thursday through President Bush's plan to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants, likely postponing major action on immigration until after the 2008 elections.

The bill's supporters fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to limit debate and clear the way for final passage of the legislation, which critics assailed as offering amnesty to illegal immigrants. The vote was 46 to 53 in favor of limiting the debate.

The legislation would be a significant victory for Presidente Arbusto in his second term in office. It faces strong opposition from many of his fellow Republicans, who call it an amnesty for people who broke U.S. laws and argue it would do little to stem the flow of illegal immigration into the United States.

Bush Administration officials are saying that the President will throw all of his influence this week into persuading the 38 GOP Senators who voted against amnesty last week that they were wrong.

Pres. Bush said this weekend that he understands that a lot of Americans and Senators have trouble with a deal that allows legalization of 12-20 million illegal aliens in exchange for heavy-duty enforcement in the future.

He says he understands that many Americans don't trust that the Federal government will live up to the enforcement end of the bargain because of past failure to do so.

But Pres. Bush says he will go to Capitol Hill Tuesday, look the Republicans in the eye and assure them that they can trust him to see that all enforcement happens.

There is something terribly strange about his whole argument.

It is as if the President who has refused to enforce most immigration laws the last six years is somebody other than himself.

In addition, Pres. Bush appears to be saying, "You can trust me to enforce the law if you approve the amnesty" but he is suggesting that without passing the amnesty the illegal immigration problem is going to grow far worse because the President won't be enforcing the law!

And he wonders why people don't trust him?

The Bush-Kennedy spin machine is desperately trying to say this is not an amnesty bill. GrassFire.org just received a copy of the actual bill (all 326 pages) and amnesty wasn’t hard to find because it STARTED ON PAGE 1, LINE 1!

The very first line of the bill makes it clear that illegals get “probationary status” before any border security triggers are implemented. Once given this legal status, the bill expressly states that a former illegal alien “may not be considered an unauthorized alien.” This is amnesty!

(May 21) Today, the Senate voted for cloture on S. 1348 by a 69-23 margin, which means the bill can now be subject to further debate and amended. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said that the Senate will not finish work on the bill prior to the Memorial Day recess.
Veterans to Congress: No Amnesty
The American Legion – the nation's largest veterans organization -- is calling on Congress to reject proposed legislation that would grant "fast track" citizenship or amnesty to illegal aliens, and to reduce the illegal alien population through aggressive enforcement of immigration laws and stronger border security.
National Commander Paul A. Morin said “[The immigration] system is broken and it needs fixing, and the solutions being tossed around by some members of Congress are not in the best interest of this country."

The document, obtained yesterday by news services, said Tehran had started up 1,312 centrifuge machines, divided into eight cascades, or networks, in the Natanz complex, in an accelerating campaign to lay a basis for "industrial scale" enrichment.

More Americans killed by illegal aliens than Iraq war

Illegal aliens are killing more Americans than the Iraq war, says a new report from Family Security Matters that estimates some 2,158 murders are committed every year by illegal aliens in the U.S. The group says that number is more than 15 percent of all the murders reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the U.S. and about three times the representation of illegal aliens in the general population.

Mike Cutler, a former senior special agent with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (the former INS), is a fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies and an advisor to Family Security Matters (FSM). He says the high number of Americans being killed by illegal aliens is just part of the collateral damage that comes with tolerating illegal immigration.

"The military actually called for the BORTAC team, ... the elite unit of the Border Patrol, to be detailed to Iraq to help to secure the Iraqi border," Cutler notes. "Now, if our military can understand that Iraq's security depends in measure on the ability to protect its border against insurgents and terrorists, then why isn't our country similarly protecting our own borders?" "As for President Bush using his powers to pardon the two agents, I can only go by his track record on border security. I expect him to do exactly what he has been doing for the last six years." "NOTHING."

The Associated Press is reporting that President Bush is open to the possibility of a pardon for border agents, saying "there's a process for pardons." He added that the White House will review the case.

As two U.S. Border Patrol agents surrendered to federal marshals Wednesday afternoon to begin serving more than a decade in jail for shooting an illegal drug smuggler, a federal lawmaker and conservative advocacy group expressed outrage at President Bush for not pardoning the men.

"This is the worst betrayal of American defenders I have ever seen," Rep. Dana Rohrabacher said of the president.

"It's shameful this was done by someone who is in the Republican Party," the California Republican added in comments coinciding with the jailing of agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. Bush "obviously thinks more about his agreements with Mexico than the lives of American people and backing up his defenders."

"Our border agents risk their lives daily to uphold our immigration laws and defend our borders," he said. "If the conviction of Ramos and Compean is an indication of how our government will repay them, we can be certain good men and women will soon flee the ranks of Border Patrol service."

The immunity agreement protected Aldrete-Davila from being charged in the United States with drug smuggling. Ramos and Compean found 743 pounds of marijuana in the van he abandoned near the Rio Grande along the border with Mexico.

Aldrete-Davila was shot after he illegally entered the United States near Fabens, Texas, and refused efforts by the agents to stop his vehicle. Court records show he jumped from his van and ran south to the Rio Grande, where he was confronted by Compean, who was knocked to the ground.

Although wounded, Aldrete-Davila managed to cross the border and escape in a waiting van. The government's prosecution began after an investigator from the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General located Aldrete-Davila in Mexico. The investigator had been dispatched after the suspect's mother complained to a Border Patrol agent in Arizona that her son had been shot.

Ramos and Compean shot Aldrete-Davila somewhere in the nether regions.
Perhaps they should have aimed a little higher.
